Pro-Choice Oklahomans: Issues

We Oppose Parental Notification Laws!

Family Values cannot be legislated.

The Government cannot mandate healthy family communication where it does not already exist.

Indeed, laws mandating parental notice or consent actually harm the young women they purport to protect by increasing illegal or self-induced abortion, family violence, suicide, later abortions, and unwanted childbirth.

In a wonderful world, responsible parents should be involved when their young daughters face crisis pregnancies. Every parent hopes that a child confronting a crisis will seek the advice and counsel of those who care for her most and know her best. In fact, even in the absence of laws mandating parental involvement, most young women DO turn to their parents when they are considering abortion. Yet unfortunately, some young women cannot involve their parents because they come from homes where physical violence or emotional abuse are prevalent or because their pregnancies are the result of incest. In certain circumstances, teens facing a crisis pregnancy travel to another state where there is less stringent or no parental law to avoid telling their parents.

MANDATORY PARENTAL CONSENT AND NOTICE LAWS ENDAGER HEALTH
Parental consent and notice laws endanger young women's health by forcing some to turn to illegal or self-induced abortions, to delay the procedure, or to bear a child against their will.

JUDICIAL BYPASS PROVISIONS FAIL TO PROTECT YOUNG WOMEN
So, the anti-choice folks say that they will allow a Judge to intervene, if a young woman is a victim of incest or in an abusive home. In these cases, young women are required to go before a judge who makes a decision to grant or deny permission for an abortion based on a short interview. Some will face anti-choice judges. Many young women are intimidated or cannot maneuver the legal procedures or cannot attend the hearing during school hours. Others do not go because they fear the proceedings will not be confidential. The time required to schedule the court proceeding may result in a delay, thereby increasing the health risks.

YOUNG WOMEN WHO DO NOT INVOLVE A PARENT HAVE GOOD REASONS
Most young women find love, support and safety in the home. Many, however, justifiably fear that they will be physically or emotionally abused if forced to disclose their pregnancy. Government mandated disclosure will have devastating effects on such women.

THE EFFECTS OF TEENAGE CHILDBEARING CAN BE DEVASTATING

Forced childbearing among teenagers that result from these laws ruin women's lives. There goes college. There goes freedom. There goes independence.

CONCLUSION:

Reduce the right. Respect the need.
